THE
GREAT PRETENDER
(aka.
Dead End Brattigan)
(1991 made-for-tv-movie; originally aired 4/14/91 on NBC) Bruce Greenwood stars as Earle Brattigan, a brazen yet likeable jounalist who returns to work for the newspaper that fired him after winning a law suit against them. Even the Pulitzer Prize he won can't rescue Brattigan from the wrath of his defeated editor, however, who gives him a basement office and the dead end newpaper files for story assignments. An engaging script has some unexpected edges and other rewards that include an off-beat friendship with his assistant (played by Gregg Henry) as well as a dog named Zsa Zsa and the chance to see him use numerous accents as he acts out a variety of roles in his quest for that big story. Jessica Steen co-stars as his sidekick and reluctant love interest. Filmed in 1989 but not broadcast till 1991. This made-for-tv movie was actually the pilot for an unpicked-up series. Occassionally repeated on tv, but not available on video. It was released in Europe under its proposed series title Dead End Brattigan Stephen J. Cannell Productions, Inc. (Note: the
